Joe Jackson (born David Ian Jackson, 11 August 1954, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire) is an English musician and singer-songwriter now living in Berlin, whose five Grammy nominations span 1979 to 2001. He is probably best-known for the 1978 hit song “Is She Really Going Out with Him?”, which still gets extensive FM radio airplay; for his 1982 hit, “Steppin’ Out”; and for his 1984 success with, “You Can’t Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)”.
Along with Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, Jackson was a part of the trio of British based artists who challenged the punk scene and brought a New Wave sound to theUnited States in the late 1970s. He was popular for his power-pop and new wave music early on before moving to more eclectic, though less commercially successful, pop/jazz/classical musical pieces.
Todays letter is H and representing said letter is George Harrison. Also included are the lyrics to one of my favorite songs by George, Beware of Darkness.
Back to the alphabet today. Initially thought of the go-go’s, then changed my mind when I realized that one of my favorites started with a G. Genesis in paperback format.
Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno (born 15 May 1948), commonly known as simply Eno, is an English musician, composer, record producer, music theorist and singer, who, as a solo artist, is best known as one of the principal innovators of ambient music.
The one and only Bob Dylan gets the nod for the “D” design of this alphabet. It was a toss up (again). My other choice was Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, but that was just too much.
Todays letter is C. It was a toss up between Johnny Cash and Cher. Cher wins. There was a girl in junior high, Judy McDonald (i think) that looked like Cher. I was enamored and we went steady for like three days. Then she moved on.
Geoffrey Arnold “Jeff” Beck (born 24 June 1944) is an English rock guitarist. He was one of the three noted guitarists which include Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, to have played with The Yardbirds. He was ranked 14th in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.
MSNBC has called Beck a “guitarist’s guitarist” and Rolling Stone Magazine has described him as “one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock”.
Much of Beck’s recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sound and his releases have spanned genres ranging from blues-rock, heavy metal, jazz fusion and most recently, an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Beck has earned wide critical praise; furthermore, he has received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance five times. Although he has had two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not been able to establish and maintain a broad following or the sustained commercial success of many of his collaborators and bandmates.
OK so to try and stay on track, I have decided to create a rock alphabet. Not a truly original idea, but one I will undertake, none the less. Entry the first, Angus Young of AC/DC.
This was a cover for a band called Structure7. Did this a couple of years ago. Inspiration has been escaping me and this project has been slipping away. Reality has a way of impinging on creativity. But I have another idea that may keep me on track for at least 26 days more. That will be my next post…
This was a poster for the historic last performance of The Kelvinators. Old, cold and slightly rockin’; that was The K’s m.o. (And bad spanish translations.)
